Recently Chris and I were asked, “why.” Well “why” is a big question when you really sit down and think about it. The “why” in this case was in reference to why he and I have decided to start Old Breed Outdoors. In all honesty, it is not as easy a question to answer as you might think. At least it has not been an easy question for us to answer and I think it will be a question we continue to try and answer for some time. Not just to those who ask but to ourselves as well. We spend a lot of time discussing what we are doing but until recently have not truly delved into the true “why” of what it is we are doing.
The genesis of why we started this is not necessarily the same as why we are doing it now. Chris has been telling me for quite some time that I needed to check out some of the new shows on YouTube and how good they were. He further insisted that we could do the same thing with our hunting adventures. At first, I wasn’t so sure about the whole idea but after finally getting on YouTube and watching some of the channels I become hooked. After some time I began to agree with Chris that we probably could do some of this stuff. Filming our outdoor adventures and starting a YouTube channel ourselves. The more I got “sucked” in by these shows the more I wanted to do the same thing.
The interesting part is how it has evolved. Yes at first we thought let’s just get some content and put it up. However, the more involved we have become with the greater modern outdoor community the more we have realized we are slowly becoming part of something much more. We have always been in love with the outdoors. That is much of the reason we have become the friends that we are. We were both raised in families that thrived on outdoor adventures. Much of that of the hunting and fishing type but not limited to those two endeavors. So over the last year, the “why” has changed.
Sure we thought maybe we could get into this social media world and start a YouTube channel and eventually make some money from it. Now we realize that isn’t really where our focus is. Yes if that happens we won’t complain a bit. Not going to sit here and try and make it sound like we wouldn’t like for that happen. However, what we have realized is that we have been missing the big picture that is the outdoors world we are a part of. The more we watch the shows we enjoy, listen to podcasts and follow people within the community on social media the more our minds and souls are awakened to the opportunity before us.
We realize more now than ever that what we have as American’s in both our public and private lands is a precious thing. Outdoors opportunities are truly amazing. I have been all over the world and seen some amazing things but nothing compares to the natural wealth we have in this nation. I see now that what we must do is encourage others to join us in the outdoors. Get out and enjoy what we are so fortunate to have in this country. Climb a mountain. Go camping. Do some hunting and fishing. Whatever it is get out and experience life in the outdoors. Too many of us are caught up in the digital world and really just life in general.
If we do not fight to keep our outdoor opportunities in this nation they will quickly disappear. Specifically when it comes to public land. I’m an easterner being from Pennsylvania but I have lived much of my adult life in the west. I know just how amazing these lands are and how important it is that we continue the legacy of those that made them possible. I have seen so many amazing natural wonders in my journeys in our great nation. Hopefully, with some luck I will have many more years ahead of me to see much more and explore them with my family and friends. Chris and I hope that through our content we can inspire you all to do the same.
Yes, we are one of many that are already doing amazing things. Way more than we are doing. But as Chris put it, “what’s better one voice or many voices.” Join us as we learn more and more about what is out there and how we can ensure that our children and their children alike can enjoy them as well. In the end that is the true “why” of this journey we are on. If generations from now our grandchildren’s children aren’t able to have the same adventures on the same soil and water we have, we have failed. So today we fight. We fight for awareness, opportunity and new people to join us on the journey.
